Clinical Note: eGFR is an estimate and may not be accurate in all populations. Consider additional factors such as muscle mass, acute kidney injury, and pregnancy. Always use clinical judgment in conjunction with laboratory values.
eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) measures how well your kidneys filter waste from your blood. It's calculated using serum creatinine, age, gender, and race. eGFR is the best overall indicator of kidney function.
CKD-EPI formula is more accurate for most patients and is recommended by KDIGO guidelines. MDRD is an alternative formula that is less accurate but widely used historically. Our calculator provides both for comparison.
CKD stages according to KDIGO 2012: Stage 1 (eGFR ≥90 with kidney damage), Stage 2 (eGFR 60-89 with damage), Stage 3a (eGFR 45-59), Stage 3b (eGFR 30-44), Stage 4 (eGFR 15-29), Stage 5 (eGFR <15, kidney failure).
Weight is not required for eGFR calculation (CKD-EPI or MDRD), but it is required for Creatinine Clearance calculation using the Cockcroft-Gault formula.
